Stewarding our Future

For decades, Concordia University’s Ann Arbor campus has been a beacon of light and a demonstration of Christ’s preeminence and provision for us all. The campus has left an indelible mark on its students, the Church, and the broader world. The 2013 merger that brought new life to this campus was a bold and worthwhile endeavor, ushering in a decade of revitalization and renewed purpose. These efforts have borne fruit, shaping countless lives and advancing our mission in profound ways. However, as we reflect on this journey, it is clear that the status quo is no longer an option.

The university stands at a pivotal crossroads, where the challenges of long-term financial sustainability and the mounting pressures of a changing higher education landscape intersect with the institution’s enduring commitment to excellence and its mission to educate, innovate, and serve. To protect Concordia’s future, we must chart a visionary path forward—one that embraces adaptability and ingenuity without compromising the quality of education or the integrity of our mission and purpose. This path forward is guided by the unwavering belief that by building a strong financial foundation, we are stewarding the campus not just for today, but for generations to come.

Recently, University leaders have made several key decisions that reflect the shared commitment to CUWAA’s mission and vision. In 2025 and beyond, we will live out the commitments we have made as we:

Supplement

Supplement the services and resources we offer students enrolled in Ann Arbor-based programs by contracting with a partner organization. Concordia’s leaders are deeply committed to providing an exceptional student life experience; one that will ensure Concordia students can grow holistically, in mind, body, and spirit. A vital part of accomplishing this comes through the support services available to students, whether they be in the areas of wellness, career development, academic resources, or campus activities. Concordia’s Executive Team is exploring ways to enhance both the range and quality of services available to our Ann Arbor students, while maximizing our university’s budget and continuing to deliver on our promise of an all-encompassing growth experience for students.

We will share more details about Student Services here as decisions are finalized.

Reframe

Reframe the way we accomplish church work training in order to right-size our programs and better steward our resources for the future. The need for church workers is urgent, and our Concordias nationwide have always prioritized equipping The Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod with highly competent individuals to carry out the Gospel mission. In the 2025-26 academic year and beyond, we will maintain a path to becoming a Lutheran teacher by offering online degree routes to a bachelor’s degree in education, with an online Lutheran Teacher Diploma option.

Additionally, work is currently underway to create a streamlined Liberal Arts bachelor’s degree with an intended launch in fall 2026. The vision for this innovative degree is to honor the tradition of Lutheran liberal arts education stretching from 16th-century Wittenberg to 21st-century Ann Arbor while adapting the program to the needs of the contemporary world. This program will provide the framework to build out new church work programs that will directly address the needs of the Church. We will publicize more details about this program as they become available.

Ensure

Ensure wise stewardship of existing campus assets and resources. Concordia’s leaders share an ongoing commitment to securing a sustainable and thriving future for our university community. At the heart of our efforts is a steadfast dedication to stewardship – a responsibility we hold not only to today’s students, but also to the generations who will follow in their footsteps.

Concordia has long embraced a mission centered on academic excellence, innovation, and service for the sake of Christ and for the betterment of the Lord’s Kingdom. This mission is supported by a financial foundation that requires careful cultivation to ensure our continued ability to meet the dynamic and evolving needs of our institution.

Moving forward, all of the assets and resources of the main campus will be under review and consideration as we seek to achieve financial sustainability and live out our missional commitments at the Ann Arbor campus.

Enhance

Enhance our North Building campus by building the infrastructure needed for a vibrant educational experience. Beginning in the summer of 2025, we will migrate all existing Ann Arbor-based university operations to the campus located at 3475 Plymouth Road in Ann Arbor, otherwise known as the “North Building.” Already, Concordia’s North Building houses the newest and most sophisticated facilities owned by Concordia in Ann Arbor, with significant remodels and renovations having been completed as recently as 2022. We envision a future that goes even further.

We are committed to enhancing the residence life experience and creating spaces that foster community and support student growth. Our long-term aspirations include building a state-of-the-art academic facility that will provide an exceptional environment for teaching and learning. Additionally, we are exploring the possibility of developing apartment-style student housing at the North Campus that will include a fitness center to promote community, health, and wellness.

While concrete plans are still in development, we are excited about these possibilities and will share updates here as they take shape.
